What is a Lysian Candidate?
In traditional institutions, saints are canonized for compliance and service to state-backed dogmas. In the Church of Dionysus, a candidate for sainthood—a Lysian candidate (named for Dionysus Lysios, The Liberator)—is evaluated based on how their life and death embodied the wild, uncontainable pulse of truth, art, and love in defiance of rigid, tyrannical systems.
These individuals are our ancestors of the margins: those who paid the ultimate price for refusing to hide who they were. The following historical figures are under formal consideration for sainthood within our church.
The Candidates
I. The Sacred Bards (Patrons of Truth through Art)
Abu Nuwas (Persia / Middle East): A master of the Arabic language whose intoxicating, homoerotic verse constantly defied the moral policing of the Caliphate. He stands as a monumental figure of resistance, proving that poetry and desire cannot be legislated out of existence.
Federico García Lorca (Spain): A titan of modern literature and theater assassinated by fascist forces during the Spanish Civil War. He embodies Dionysus the Playwright, whose voice and love terrified those who sought absolute conformity.
II. The Companions of Power (Defiers of Feudal and Imperial Dogma)
Dong Xian (Ancient China): The beloved companion of Emperor Ai of Han, whose deep bond defied the rigid hierarchy of the imperial court. Following the Emperor's death, he faced total political ruin rather than renounce his place, choosing a sovereign exit rather than submission.
Piers Gaveston (England): The close companion of King Edward II. His high-ranking position and open devotion threatened the feudal barons, leading to his judicial murder in 1312 by a system terrified of untamed power.
III. The Witnesses of the Gallows, the Stake, and the Cell
Alexander Browne (Australia): Executed by hanging in Sydney in December 1828 under brutal British colonial law for a consensual same-sex relationship on a whaling vessel—representing the lonely, isolated defiance found at the literal edges of the earth.
Jean Diot and Bruno Lenoir (France): Arrested on a street in Paris in 1750, they became the last two souls officially burned at the stake by the French state specifically for homosexuality. They anchor our memory in the transition from medieval zealotry to state terror.
Willem Arondeus (Netherlands): An openly gay artist and anti-Nazi resistance fighter who blew up an Amsterdam registry office to protect the persecuted. Executed in 1943, his final defiant words declared that homosexuals are not cowards. He embodies the courage to tear down structures of oppression.
Alan Turing (United Kingdom): The foundational architect of the digital age, whose brilliant mind was targeted and destroyed by state-mandated chemical cruelty. He represents the tragic waste of human genius by a society terrified of difference.
Mokhtar N. and Ali A. (Iran): Two young men publicly executed by hanging under modern penal codes criminalizing love between men. Their inclusion ensures our church remains anchored not just to history, but to the ongoing, bleeding edge of global tyranny.
